(WTAQ-WLUK) — The renovation and expansion of Appleton’s airport is earning high honors from the state.
The Wisconsin Economic Development Association (WEDA) announced the Appleton International Airport Terminal Expansion and Renovation project is the 2026 Community and Economic Development Award (CEDA) winner in the Economic Development Initiative category. This category recognizes innovation in community and economic development that promotes economic growth within communities and regions.
The CEDA Awards were established by WEDA to recognize economic development projects, businesses, and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Wisconsin economy. Winners were recognized at the annual CEDA Awards ceremony, held last week in Kenosha.

It is well deserved, as this project demonstrates how strategic investment in critical infrastructure can create new opportunities for businesses, strengthen regional connectivity, and position an entire region for continued growth,” said WEDA President and CEO Melissa Hunt. “Through strong collaboration among project partners, the airport has created a modern and accessible gateway that connects Northeast Wisconsin to markets and opportunities around the world.”
The $92 million expansion and renovation of Appleton International Airport is transforming a critical regional asset into a catalyst for greater economic growth in Northeast Wisconsin. The project is meeting rapidly growing demand, with passenger traffic and flight departures doubling over the past decade. More than an infrastructure improvement, the project strengthens Northeast Wisconsin’s connection to national and global markets and reinforces the airport’s role as an important driver of regional economic development.
The 47,000-square-foot terminal expansion was developed through strong collaboration among Outagamie County, Miron Construction, Mead & Hunt, airlines, and regional businesses. The project increases capacity to accommodate larger aircraft and expanded routes. Beyond expanding air service, the project is creating new opportunities for regional economic activity through restaurants, retail concepts, and entrepreneurial businesses within the terminal. Its emphasis on placemaking, accessibility, and sustainability, including a sensory room, hearing loops, and a goal of achieving Net Zero Energy, creates a new standard for the value a regional airport can provide to its community.
