PLATTEVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The University of Wisconsin-Platteville has temporarily suspended all men’s cross-country activities and meets while it reviews allegations of potential hazing and student-athlete code-of-conduct violations within the team.
The university said it became aware of the allegations after they were first reported to Chancellor Tammy Evetovich on Sept. 1. UW-Platteville said it began reviewing the matter promptly.
After receiving the initial report late in the afternoon on Sept. 1, Evetovich was briefed the following day and requested additional information, which was provided Sept. 3. On Sept. 4, Evetovich decided to temporarily suspend all men’s cross-country activities and meets pending further review.
Coach James Akita has been placed on paid administrative leave. The Universities of Wisconsin Administration Office of Compliance and Integrity is investigating the matter.
“Our priority is to support students involved while ensuring this matter is investigated as thoroughly, fairly and promptly as possible,” UW-Platteville spokesperson Melanie Platt-Gibson said.
UW-Platteville said it could not provide additional comment because the allegations are under investigation. The university said it is committed to protecting student privacy, following applicable policies and laws, and cooperating with the appropriate review process.
Support and counseling resources are being offered to students involved, the university said, and additional updates will be shared as appropriate.
