(UW ATHLETICS) MADISON – No. 14 Wisconsin women’s soccer (5-1-2, 1-0-1 Big Ten) earned its first conference win of the season Sunday afternoon, defeating Northwestern, 2-0, at McClimon Soccer Complex.
How it happened
Wisconsin struck first in the 13th minute. Traub helped create the opportunity before finding Gulbrandsen, who put her shot into the bottom-left corner to give the Badgers an early 1-0 advantage.
The goal was Gulbrandsen’s second of the season and gave Wisconsin a lead it would carry into halftime. Northwestern produced three shots and three corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, while Wisconsin scored on its lone first-half shot.
Second Half:
The Badgers came out of the break looking for more and controlled much of the attacking play in the second half. Wisconsin generated nine shots after halftime, including attempts from Gulbrandsen, Abby Ballek, Traub, Connolly and Taylor Gordon.
Wisconsin doubled its advantage in the 68th minute. Traub once again provided the setup, connecting with Connolly, who headed the ball into the top-right corner to make it 2-0. The goal marked Connolly’s second of the season, while Traub picked up her second assist of the afternoon.
Northwestern continued to push late, but Stover denied Gwen Zimmerman in the 82nd minute and the Badger defense held firm through the final whistle. Stover finished with one save to earn the clean sheet.
Wisconsin finished with a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in shots on goal. Traub led Wisconsin with three shots and two assists
