HOWARD, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Howard officials and firefighters broke ground today on an expansion of Fire Station No. 2, a project aimed at improving emergency response times as new development is expected in the area.
The station is located on Shawano Avenue, east of Maplewood Meats. The expansion will add living quarters to the existing building, a change the department said will help crews respond faster to calls in the area.
The project comes as the department anticipates additional residential and nursing home developments nearby. The department said cutting response times is a critical priority for both EMS calls and fires.
“Every minute of free burning in a fire, the fire doubles in size. So if we cut our response times that, that much, we can really get to the fire early,” Chief Dennis Staeven said.
Construction is expected to wrap up by May of next year. New staff are expected to be hired by Nov. 20-27, with the department targeting January 20-28 to begin running an ambulance and fire engine from the station.
