GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The longest-serving mayor in Green Bay’s history is looking for another term.
In a news conference Monday morning, former Mayor Jim Schmitt announced plans to run in the April 2027 election.
Schmitt previously served as mayor from 2003-19 before deciding not to seek a fifth term.
Schmitt, who has been working at New Community Shelter, focused a portion of his announcement on his plans to fight homelessness in the city. He also discussed transparency in city government, cutting red tape for development, making home ownership easier and improving education.
Current Mayor Eric Genrich has not decided whether to seek a third term. No one else has declared their candidacy.
When Schmitt was in office, he helped bring term limits to the city’s government. No one can be mayor or on the Common Council for more than 12 consecutive years. Schmitt previously said he’s always been open to someone running again after taking a mandatory break.
