STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A 75-year-old woman died after she was struck by a vehicle while in a Sturgeon Bay crosswalk.
Just after 11 a.m. Monday, police were called to the intersection of 3rd Avenue and Michigan Street for a report of a vehicle vs pedestrian incident.
When emergency personnel arrived, the woman was found lying in the south intersection, unresponsive.
The driver of the vehicle said she was watching and waiting for a group of people to decide on which direction they were going to cross a different portion of that intersection. When that group made their decision, the driver proceeded to turn left from S. 3rd Avenue onto Michigan Street and headed west. The driver said she did not see the other woman in the south crosswalk who was walking from west to east and struck her, police say.
The injured woman was taken to a local hospital before she was transferred to Green Bay where she later died.
The driver, identified as 73-year-old Susanne Scheider of Sturgeon Bay, was issued two citations: failure to stop for a stop sign, and failure to yield to a pedestrian. A Sept. 21 court date is scheduled, court records show.
