CLINTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Clintonville business is expanding.
“It’s just huge what they’ve got going here and it’s amazing that it’s, we pulled it off. And they pulled it off, I think it’s great,” said Mayor Jeannie Schley.
Schutt Industries marked the start of construction on its new 90,000 sq.ft. building at 185 Industrial Avenue Friday.
Schutt Industries manufactures severe-duty military, commercial and consumer trailers and cargo-handling equipment. The company also provides custom-engineered integration solutions for communications, disaster response, defense and other specialized applications.
According to Schutt Vice President Steve Schutt, “Started this expansion project in 2024 and really just putting in the the mechanisms and the tools to support what we’re going to be doing over the next several years. But, also the future for next decades to come.”
Schutt industries, which started out in the 1998 building small trailers has now evolved into the construction of 40 ton triaxial trailers for the military. It also builds commercial trailers and it has a retail line of recreational off-road ones too.
But it’s the company’s military work that has led to the need for this $16 million expansion.
“That timing is really in support of yes what we have going on currently and some of these future contracts and military trailers that we’ll be building here in short order,” added Schutt.
The new space, right next to its current facility will house offices. But it will mainly be used for assembly and painting, freeing up space next door for more welding capacity.
“This will give them the capabilities for a stronger production and more of a workflow for them,” said Derek Wegner, project manager with Alliance Construction & Design. He added, “And with being able to keep it on site versus another site, it gives them the capability to move equipment back and forth in a timely manner.”
The expansion also comes with a need to hire another 30 to 40 skilled laborers.
Schutt said, “We have we have a good community and surrounding communities, you know where there are still a lot of you know skilled folks and perspective employees.”
The expansion is expected to take less than year to complete with production ramping up in the new facility by next Spring.
Schutt says it won’t wait until the new building is completed to start filling open positions. It’s hiring right now.
