TOWN OF LAWRENCE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Months after shovels went in the ground for a development in southern Brown County, there’s noticeable progress on the construction site, right along Interstate 41.
The multi-phase Lawrence Town Center project is on schedule and when completed will create a sense of community on the property.
What was once a corn field is now being developed into 153 acres of residential, commercial, and recreational space.
“Four years ago, we had a contract with a large warehouse. The community approved it. But there were many in the community that weren’t happy about it because it was a massive building and I understand that completely. And they pulled out of the project, which turns out to be a blessing,” said Jim Ostrom, President/CEO of Boardwalk Development Co.
The property owners regrouped and created a plan for the current development project that is rapidly moving forward.
Dirt has been moved, roads carved, and thousands of perennials, annuals, and trees planted. A manmade lake and water tower are the centerpieces of what will become home for hundreds of people.
According to Ostrom, “Our apartment building is 106 units. It will be ready next summer at some point. And the basement underground parking heated garage is just being built at the moment and next week we’ll start setting some precast concrete floors to that, to the first floor. So it’s pretty exciting.”
In the coming months, construction on the first 20 homes on the property will begin. There are more than a hundred lots to fill as the project moves forward to become a full service community.
“There’s a medical clinic that’s under contract coming into the site and we think there’ll be a lot more amenity type interest in commercial properties coming in,” added Ostrom.
The plans call for pickleball and basketball courts, a kids’ playground, miles of hiking and jogging and walking trails.
And at a time when housing continues to be scarce, Lawrence Town Center will help to fulfil that need.
Ostrom said, “My generation might have aspired to move up in housing. This generation aspires for more life experience, going on trips, living in a place with a lifestyle versus just a cul-de-sac. And so we think it fits the times perfectly and we think the demand is gonna be great.”
The developer says once more roads in Lawrence Town Center are paved they will begin construction on the homes and start offering lots for sale.
The first homes in the development are expected to be completed mid to late winter.
