OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Oshkosh Media will continue its work in its current home, at least for a little while longer.
Shows on the Life TV channel will no longer be produced in the Oshkosh Media building, as the city plans to convert the space into a hub for its new Communication and Engagement Division.
According to officials, the focus of this expansion is to introduce a central community contact point for residents. The new division will operate all city communication in-house; previously, the city outsourced its media notices and social media to third-parties.
That growth means dissolving much of Oshkosh Media’s operations. Programs that were filmed in the studio were initially told they must find a new home come the end of May, but now they’re being told that their work can continue in the building through July.
“In this email, it says they’re working on options, but it doesn’t give anything specific. But it says, ‘Go ahead and tape your shows and nothing really will be done through June or July,” said John Nieman, producer and host of The Place to Be Oshkosh.
Nieman said he and other volunteer producers have been frustrated by a lack of clear communication and transparency from the city throughout this process.
“I rushed in on May 13 and taped two shows, thinking that there was a deadline, and I rushed to get the guests and I rushed to do everything, and then we get this information,” he said.
Nieman added he knows of one producer who is “not going to do his show anymore because of the rigmarole of what’s been going on.”
We don’t know what’s going to happen. Do we need to go out and get volunteers? Do we need to go out and try to get hooked up with YouTube?
Despite the extension, Nieman said he knows there’s still an end date looming for Oshkosh Media shows.
“How can you take a 40-year institution and say it’s gone? How can you take a beautiful studio, such as the one Oshkosh Media has, and turn it into offices? It doesn’t make any sense to me,” Nieman said.
