ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — People of all abilities can enjoy fun in the sun this summer at Ashwaubomay Lake, thanks to the addition of an accessible beach wheelchair.
The handicap-accessible Mobi-Chair allows wheelchair users to move freely on the sand and even enter the water.
“This has been a dream of ours to get this wheelchair, but it is pricier,” said Melody Escoto, aquatic coordinator for the village of Ashwaubenon.
Options for Independent Living provided grant money for the Mobi-Chair, and the Ashwaubenon Lions Club funded the remainder of the purchase.
Escoto said having this device will make a huge difference for individuals with mobility issues.
“We want our facility to be accessible to anybody, and unfortunately with that beach-sand setting, that’s not always possible. A normal pool, you can utilize your wheelchair anywhere on the deck, but a sand setting changes the element of that. So finding an option for them, which is one of these beach wheelchairs, was something that we were looking to do.”
Right now, the Mobi-Chair is open for use by anyone at any time. Escoto says if it becomes popular, they may start taking reservations.
Ashwaubomay Lake lifeguards and staff will be able to assist individuals into the water, if needed.
