CLEVELAND, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Most people learn best by doing, and the healthcare field is no exception.
Lakeshore College’s Cleveland campus says hands-on education is the answer to recruiting and retaining healthcare professionals.
The new center even has patient simulators, which help students practice hands-on learning without the stress of being in the emergency room.
Lakeshore Nursing Instructor Katie Kuhn says the more they expose their students to, the higher their confidence.
“Some scenarios they may or may not see when they get out in the real world, that are safer for them to see in a simulation setting,” says Kuhn.
The instructors observe and can talk and direct students through microphones mid-lab.
“I can lead them down whichever road I want them to go down, or even if it is not what I am planning on and see what happens. Let them make their choices and use their critical thinking skills,” says Kuhn.
The college strives to create an individual learning experience.
“It’s this weird feeling that you know, you can make mistakes, but you don’t want to, but if you do, it is safe, it’s okay,” says Becky McCarty, an LPN student.
Kuhn says the simulator “can grunt, she can cough, she can scream, so dependent on the scenario, I can do what I need her to do.”
Students are getting opportunities they would never get in a normal clinical setting.
“Potentially for our EMT students, for those moms that are potentially delivering at home, and they call for an ambulance and they are like, ‘We have never seen an actually delivery before’ so I can give them that with her,” says Kuhn.
Lakeshore College hopes to meet the rising demand of healthcare workers. Visit their website for more information on enrollment.
