GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Presidential campaigns owe the city of Green Bay more than $64,000 in security expenses dating to the 2016 race.
Mayor Eric Genrich’s office released the numbers Tuesday.
According to the records, former President Donald Trump’s campaign still owes the city $33,389.55 from an April visit. President Joe Biden’s campaign owes $6,989.58 from first lady Jill Biden’s visit last month.
From the 2016 race, former secretary of state Hillary Clinton’s campaign owes $12,522.86, Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign owes $1,982.10 and Trump’s campaign owes $9,380.10.
No visits were made in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are honored to host visits from presidential candidates and appreciate the significance these events hold for our community,” Genrich said in a news release. “At the same time, there are very real costs associated with the public safety resources these events require, and it is crucial that the financial responsibilities associated with these services are borne by the campaigns, not our taxpayers.”
“Green Bay residents are frugal people who pay their bills, and they expect presidential candidates to do the same. It is a matter of fairness and fiscal responsibility — our residents should not bear the burden of these expenses.”
Genrich’s office says information on public safety costs associated with campaign visits will continue to be made publicly available through this year’s campaign.
