ALGOMA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) -The Algoma school district is one of the first in northeast Wisconsin to release a plan to return to school in fall.
Despite having plans for returning to school in the fall, Algoma is still preparing for change.
Algoma school district superintendent Nick Cochart says, “Our plan for reopening this fall is our first step in being transparent with our community. We know that this plan will change and that we have some very difficult decisions ahead of us.”
Additionally, Cochart says they will rely on these principles moving forward:
– Unified Decision-Makers: making informed decisions with the health and safety of all in mind
– Space Matters: following social distancing guidelines
– Lead with Facts: knowing that contact and exposure increase the spread of COVID-19
– Commit to Prevention: proper precautions should be utilized to limit the spread of COVID-19
– Be Resilient: monitoring the current situation, pivot when needed, and adjusting on a consistent basis
Algoma’s plan details two options: in-person learning via a “One-Room Schoolhouse Model” and virtual learning.
Online learning platforms will be implemented no matter what.
Preschool teacher and parent Emily Krueger is happy to have some guidelines set.
“I think we were just happy to have some kind of communication because a lot of districts and parents and teachers are waiting for something to come out. A lot of us are planners so this has really been hard,” Krueger says.
Fox 11 talked with a parent off camera from a neighboring district. She says that she is considering transferring her children to Algoma if their school district does not go back to normal.
“Teachers want to plan, parents want to plan, and I know that the Algoma school district will do what they can to accommodate,” Krueger says.
Krueger hopes both her and her son can be back in the classroom in fall.
“Looking forward to him going back to his peers. I think he needs to see his peers, he’s been missing that. I do much better in person. I miss my colleagues. I miss the kids so I’m really excited to go back,” Krueger says.
