GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A reckless driving crash has left the side of a building on Main Street in Green Bay in rubble.
“Squealing… and then I heard the boom,” said Bronson Smith, a Green Bay Resident.
Main Street is closed between St. George Street and N. Irwin Avenue until further notice.
“At 10:45 p.m. last night, officers were called for the report of a vehicle versus building in the 1200 block of Main Street,” said Lt. Brad A. Strouf of the Green Bay Police Departments Investigations Division.
Officers were called to the scene Sunday for a minivan that crashed into the Main Street Commons building, causing a portion of the building to fall into the road.
“Kind of ironic, I was watching TV and it was a little boring so I looked on my cameras and I saw all of the fire trucks,” said James Brick, the owner of The Main Street Commons.
Witnesses blocks away could hear the sound of the crash.
The Main Street Commons building is home to several businesses, including The Main Salon and Spa.
Nearby businesses, including OG Sunless Studio, are affected as well.
Olive Galiano, the owner of OG Sunless Studio, says all of her shop’s duties have been pushed off due to the crash.
“We unfortunately have to be closed. We’ve had to cancel some appointments today which is really sad. There are tons of businesses in here,” added Galiano.
Brick says he’s waiting for city inspection results to determine what the next steps will be for the businesses that were victims of the disaster.
“What they determine the damage is and then, put together a plan going forward to see what needs to be demoed and what can be salvaged,” added Brick.
Police say initial reports by witnesses indicate reckless driving as a cause of the crash.
Both the driver of the minivan, a 29-year-old Green Bay woman, and the passenger of the minivan, a 27-year-old Oneida man, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries.
The driver was arrested.
Drivers navigating the incident’s road closures can use the alternative routes:
- University Avenue
- Walnut Street
- E. Mason Street
