GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The Greater Green Bay YMCA took the first step in preserving a part of its history for the next five generations.
The organization held a ceremony Wednesday to seal its new time capsule outside the front doors of its Ferguson Family YMCA facility, downtown Green Bay.
After opening the 1924 Greater Green Bay YMCA time capsule in 2021 to mark the Green Bay YMCA’s 150th anniversary, the new time capsule will replace the space of the original 1924 time capsule.
“When we first opened it up, two years ago, there was an American flag, for instance, with 48 stars on it, there was a bible in there, there was news clippings of the day, of the capital campaign that made this building possible. It was built for $425,000 back in 1923, all through community support,” said president and CEO of the Greater Green Bay YMCA, Sean Elliott.
This time, Elliott said the YMCA filled the new time capsule with today’s news and stuff from its community partners, including Schneider National, Green Bay Packaging and Berners-Schober Associates, Inc.
“It will be an exciting time in 100 years when that time capsule comes out from the downtown YMCA.”
