APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – With the Fox Cities Marathon just days away, organizers say they still need more volunteers.
According to the marathon’s website, each year, more than 2,300 volunteers help make the weekend of events go smoothly.
“Volunteering really ebbs and flows,” Fox Cities Marathon Volunteer Coordinator Cathy Mutschler said. “We work with the community, and late last week, several of them found they are falling short — people are sick.”
Recent changes have left around a dozen volunteer roles unfilled as of 7:30 p.m. Monday. This could mean some changes to the volunteer format.
“Some of our water stations will be running a little leaner this year — maybe like 15 volunteers. All that means is that those volunteers working there will be super busy,” Mutschler said.
The shortage could also cause lower numbers in backup workers. In recent years, marathon staff tried having more help than needed, due to COVID.
Fewer workers could also impact the experience of the runners.
“I guess, without them, it really makes it hard to stay as motivated as you are throughout the 26 miles, and it’s super, super important to have great volunteers,” marathon runner Laura Nettekoven said.
Nettekoven has run in the marathon multiple times. She tells FOX 11 the support does not go unnoticed. Whether it’s handing out water or simply cheering on the participants, it’s made a big difference to her.
“I’ve done about 17 marathons, and I’m not lying when I say the Fox Cities Marathon — the support of volunteers — is by far the most invigorating.”
Mutschler said her team will be fine, but it will require adjustments.
“We don’t want at all to paint a picture that we’re desperate by any means. We’ve got a really committed crew of people.”
Fox Cities Marathon events are set for Friday through Sunday in the Fox Valley. Events include kids’ fun runs, 10K and 5K walk and runs as well as the marathon on Sunday.
