APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Green Bay teacher has been arrested in a sexual assault case from 1997, before he worked for the district.
Appleton police say they arrested Gregory A. Sawyer, 52, last Friday on one count of second-degree sexual assault of a child. Sawyer was taken to the Calumet County jail. No formal charges have been filed.
Police say they began their investigation after the alleged victim came forward recently. The investigation is ongoing and involves several jurisdictions, police say.
The Green Bay Area Public School District says Sawyer began teaching there in 1998 — after the alleged assault. He worked briefly at East and Southwest high schools before serving as a science teacher at West High School.
The district has placed him on unpaid administrative leave.
Green Bay schools are providing additional support services for students.
In a statement, the Green Bay school district said, “Since this is a personnel matter and the charges are unrelated to GBAPS, no further statements or comments will be provided.”
Anyone with information is asked to call Investigator Meyer at the Appleton Police Department at 1-920-832-5934 or Detective Graf of the Green Bay Police Department at 1-920-448-3200.
