NEW LONDON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Preparations are underway for New London’s annual St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
The Shamrock Club of New London was out on Sunday, putting fresh paint on shamrocks, located on the city’s streets.
The shamrocks are part of the city’s traditional “New Dublin” St. Patrick’s Day parade, but this year, the Shamrock Club had to cancel the parade, because of COVID-19, and modify the city’s celebrations.
“The main thing is that we can’t have crowds, and that’s ultimately why we had to cancel our parade and festival this year,” says Ryan Lanning, part of the club’s advertisement committee. “The health department’s just not allowing the crowds, and for good reason, with COVID.”
Although the parade and festival are canceled, several traditional celebrations will continue.
Today is Leprechaun Day, when the Shamrock Club will change the city’s signs to read “New Dublin.”
Other celebrations will continue throughout the week.
