GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Some high school seniors in Green Bay could be one step closer to walking across the stage at graduation.
This week the Green Bay school board voted to lower graduation requirements to the state-mandated level.
“The state has high graduation standards. Ours were just higher, but what this does is this gives students some flexibility if they’re carrying a full load as a senior and if they’re struggling with it, we want to make sure to give them space to make a decision that’s right for them and still get to the graduation stage this Spring,” Green Bay schools superintendent Stephen Murley said.
The requirements will be lowered from 22 credits to 15.
Those credits include at least four credits of English including writing composition, three credits of social studies including state and local government, three credits of mathematics, three credits of science, 1.5 credits of physical education, and 0.5 credits of health education.
Credits in personal financial literacy, as well as elective credits are no longer required to graduate.
“Any seniors that may have been inadvertently affected by the pandemic, we will be able to work with them and their families to make the best decision about graduation requirements,” Green Bay schools deputy superintendent Vicki Bayer said.
These adopted requirements for graduation will be for this school year only.
