The Appleton International Airport became the first and only airport in Wisconsin to grow food for travelers. ATW teamed up with an indoor ag technology company called Fork Farms and set up a hydroponic system for growing vegetation. The positive of using a hydroponic system is that they can grow right inside the airport without soil or any pesticides. A system like this only needs a few things, they need LED lights, air, water, and some nutrients.
Travelers eating at The Fox Cities Eatery are able to see the system at work while enjoying some of those airport grown greens on a burger. ATW’s hydroponic farm is projected to grow 300 pounds of greens for the restaurant every year. Soon this might catch on and we’ll start seeing indoor farms at other airports throughout the state.
