APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A century after the death of world-famous magician and escape artist Harry Houdini, his connection to Appleton is being remembered.
A celebration was held in downtown Appleton Saturday morning, marking 100 years since Houdini’s death October 31, 1926.
The event included a dedication of a Wisconsin Sate Historical Marker honoring Houdini and his ties to the Fox Valley community. Houdini, known around the world for his daring escapes and magic performances, immigrated to the United Sates with his family in 1878 when he was 4-years-old.
Although born in Budapest, Hungary, Houdini claimed Appleton as his hometown.
Saturday’s celebration featured multiple speakers reflecting on Houdini’s life and legacy, along with local magicians demonstrating their own tricks.
The historical marker serves as a reminder of Houdini’s connection to Appleton and the lasting impact he left on the world of magic.
