GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A Green Bay area safe car seat program has hit a funding speed bump.
The Center for Childhood Safety (CCS) in Green Bay provides safe car seats to families who cannot afford one. Technicians work one-on-one with families to determine the appropriate seat, ensure it fits the child and vehicle properly, and teach caregivers how to correctly install and use the seat.
So far in 2026, 205 families have been referred to CCS for assistance with a car seat, and CCS has provided 128 car seats to families who needed them. The need continues to grow, but CCS no longer has car seats available to meet the continued demand.
“Families are still coming to us because they need a safe car seat, and we don’t want to have to turn them away,” said Kimberly Hess, executive director of CCS. “We know that a car seat alone is not enough. Our goal is to make sure families have the right seat, that it is installed correctly, and that caregivers leave knowing how to use it every time they travel.”
CCS is now asking the community for help after exhausting its available grant funding for car seats.
Community members can also support the program by donating new, unused car seats. CCS is unable to accept used car seats. Those interested in donating new car seats are encouraged to contact CCS at (920) 272-0110 for information about current needs.
Donations to support the car seat program can be made online. Community members interested in supporting the program through a business, larger gift, or new car seat donation can contact Kimberly Hess at khess@ccsgb.org.
