GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County officials have released their proposed 2027 budget, outlining major infrastructure investments and what they say would be the lowest property tax rate on record.
Under the proposal, the mill rate would decrease by 12 cents, also described as the lowest rate on record.
The budgeted levy is $97.77 million. That total includes $1.5 million in net new construction and reflects the closure of some tax increment districts.
County debt is projected to decrease by $7.41 million.
“Since 2018, we have eliminated one hundred and thirty four million dollars in debt. I don’t know anybody else in the state of Wisconsin that’s doing something similar. There are some smaller counties that are actually debt free. And that is one of my goals as a county executive,” said executive Troy Streckenbach.
Several major initiatives are planned for 2027, including continued work on the South Bridge Connector project and investing nearly $18 million in nine different road, bridge and infrastructure projects.
Brown County also plans to use one-time funding to install and maintain new flood monitors for the East River and to install agriculture sediment basins to reduce phosphorous runoff.
Other projects and service changes in the proposal include beginning construction of the second phases of both the Port Development Site and the South Landfill site, adding a second mental health clinician, and providing open access hours for substance use assessments at the Health and Human Services Department.
