MARINETTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A community survey shows support for keeping the performing arts center at the former UW-Green Bay Marinette campus active, but there are also concerns about costs to taxpayers.
Most UWGB operations at the campus ended two years ago. A study committee has been examining options for the facilities there. The panel next meets Thursday, with survey results on the agenda.
In all, 467 responded. Among the results (some questions allowed multiple selections):
- 52.6% strongly favor preserving existing buildings
- 64.6% say the future of the campus should support education, arts and culture, with 48.8% wanting recreation and wellness programming
- 49.6% say their biggest concern about redevelopment is the cost to taxpayers, with 48.6% citing environmental impacts or loss of greenspace
- 67% said their preferred use is for the performing arts, with 48.8% favoring educational facilities, and 48.3% picking a community center
- 58.2% said it’s extremely important the property remains access to the public
For a question on what uses people would not support, specific numbers aren’t provided, but a heat map shows housing, manufacturing, and commercial use at the top of the list.
Despite support for public uses, the verbatims contain multiple comments from people urging the county to sell the property.
The survey remains open through Sept. 14.
