MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — With long-awaited PFAS funding now released, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says it will keep Marinette and Peshtigo-area residents informed and consult with the community on how the money should be used.
The DNR said updates will be shared through the PFAS Contamination in Marinette and Peshtigo Area subscription list and the DNR’s website.
The update comes as Tyco is required to make a $10 million settlement payment that has been deposited into the state’s PFAS Trust Fund to help clean up future PFAS contamination. The settlement is described as one of the largest stemming from a DNR referral in state history.
Under the agreement, Tyco also must provide clean drinking water for certain Marinette-area residents and address PFAS discharges from Tyco’s FTC. The settlement requires Tyco to continue providing replacement wells within a defined area, conduct monitoring and reporting for PFAS contamination, and continue implementing measures aimed at long-term remediation.
The Evers administration also pointed to new state funding aimed at PFAS response efforts. Earlier this year, Evers enacted what is described as the state’s first comprehensive PFAS bill, which is expected to provide more than $125 million to address PFAS contamination and help ensure communities across Wisconsin have access to clean water.
PFAS, known as forever chemicals, have been found to increase risk of certain cancers and affect growth and fertility.
