GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new attempt is underway to change Green Bay’s overnight parking restrictions.
The city council discussed the topic at their Tuesday meeting and approved the request for a deeper look at the issue.
There’s been many attempts to make Green Bay more accommodating to overnight street parking. In fact, in 2019, a city official said 19 proposals were made in the past 18 years to either eliminate or alter the city’s 3 to 5 a.m. on-street parking ban.
“You know, it’s time in the city,” said Green Bay Alderperson Ben Delie. “You’re seeing that need for parking at homes expanding.”
Delie says the time is now because driveways are getting shorter and young adults are staying home longer due to the economy – causing more crowded driveways and garages.
He is proposing to allow overnight street parking from April 1st through October 31st.
“You look at a lot of the other municipalities around the area, they have a very similar ordinance to what I’m proposing because of snow plows,” said Delie.
“You know, our rigs are 45 feet long, 8 feet wide,” said Chief Ray Fuiten of the Green Bay Metro Fire Department. “We’re not the only department within the city that has large vehicles to operate.”
Fuiten is providing that reminder to those who are expected to look at potential changes. He believes some streets would be tougher to accommodate parking changes than others.
“Some streets within the near west side and near east side, your typical older city streets that are a little narrower than you’d see out in a subdivision,” said Fuiten.
“This isn’t taking off any of those band aids on parking restrictions that we currently have,” said Delie. “We may have to put up more signage in areas on narrower streets where maybe on those streets we only use one side.”
The citation for parking on the street during restricted hours is $34.
You can request before 2 a.m. to park on the street overnight and the city’s parking division grants those for specific reasons, including disabled vehicles, lot or driveway construction, houseguests, or emergency situations. You can only make six requests per year and each request is for up to 14 consecutive days.
