DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — De Pere High School is working to get its building ready for the new school year after flooding affected 51 spaces, including the library, last month.
On July 8, heavy rainfall blanketed the area, causing street flooding around the school.
Officials say flooding occurred in and around two main areas of the high school: the LMC (library) and nearby classrooms including band rooms and athletic training spaces.
The initial mitigation and cleaning is complete. The library remains closed, but all other affected areas are open.
The district says it is in contact with its insurance carrier and claims representative to set a plan and timeline for them to assess damages and potentially file an insurance claim.
In a statement from the school district, it reads in part:
Buildings and Grounds Director Noah Wentland has worked tirelessly with the engineering team from Somerville Associates and CD Smith Construction to investigate the cause of the water penetration. Cameras, coring holes drilled in the floor and cutouts from storm drain pipes revealed failed drain piping that transports water from the roof to the storm sewer under the floor.
In consultation with engineers, CD Smith and plumbers, a local plumbing company is onsite and is working to line the pipes that failed. This is minimally invasive technology, allowing for repairs without having to break up large portions of the floor. We hope this solution will resolve water issues we’ve experienced over the last several years.
In addition, during the remediation process our vendor monitored humidity levels and treated all affected areas with mold inhibitors and related products to prevent the growth and spread of mold.
USDD custodians are taking inventory of any equipment and furniture that was damaged and developing an inventory list for replacement. We are also working to reinstall a baffling system on the roof drains to slow the flow of water that moves into the drains when we experience significant rain in a short time.
A report to the Board of Education and full update will be provided at a Monday, Aug. 3 meeting.
