OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Oshkosh Defense is looking to become the second provider of Joint Light Tactical Vehicles for the U.S. Marine Corps.
The branch posted a request for industry input to find another supplier after their current manufacturer, AM General, fell behind in production.
According to Oshkosh Defense officials, the A2 variant of the JLTV is around 18 months behind schedule, with only a handful of vehicles ready for use. Oshkosh Defense has been providing support to AM General during production.
“If they’re behind in their acquisition of the new version for the JLTV, and Oshkosh can help them procure them faster, I think obviously, the Marine Corps would be interested in that,” said USMC Retired Gen. Robert Neller.
Oshkosh Defense has produced JLTV A1s for the U.S. military since 2015. AM General was awarded the contract for the A2s in 2023. Oshkosh Defense lost that bid, which played a part in recent layoffs the company faced. Now, it is looking to step back in.
A statement from Oshkosh Defense reads in part:
As the incumbent manufacturer of the A1 and original designer of the JLTV platform, Oshkosh Defense is the only supplier capable of meeting the USMC’s operational need for JLTVs today.
The Marine Corps is currently working to replace all of its Humvee supply with JLTVs. Neller said Oshkosh Defense’s work has been reliable, and it makes sense for the company to step up.
“If the Marine Corps has this request out there for a second source of supply, it’s logical that Oshkosh, since they have the capacity to increase their production, that they would want to try to compete for that,” Neller said.
The request for information for a second supplier from the Marine Corps will remain open until June 10.
