MANITOWOC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A special craft beer is on sale to raise money for the preservation of a historic World War II submarine.
The Wisconsin Maritime Museum announced Friday the release of a limited-edition beer called Run Silent, Run Sweet. Profits from its sales will go toward the upcoming dry docking of the USS Cobia, a WWII submarine that will be displayed at the museum.
Dry docking means taking a vessel out of the water to clean, inspect and repair the underwater hull. Such maintenance is critical to ensuring the longevity of historic vessels, but this project’s price tag sits at approximately $1.5 million.
Run Silent, Run Sweet was brewed in partnership with Craft Creek Brewing Co. in Manitowoc. It’s a honey wheat ale made with Wisconsin honey “that celebrates the legacy of USS Cobia while supporting vital preservation work.”
A public unveiling of the USS Cobia will take place at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum’s seasonal rooftop bar, Sub Pub, at 5 p.m. Thursday. The event will also feature a performance by renowned Great Lakes folk musician Lee Murdock at 6:30 pm.
Run Silent, Run Sweet will be served exclusively at the Sub Pub, but will be available for guests to purchase in collectible cans to take home and enjoy. The Sub Pub’s regular hours are Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 5-10 p.m.
Quantities are limited, so supporters are encouraged to visit early and raise a glass to preserve history. Every purchase supports the USS Cobia Dry Dock Fund, ensuring the continued preservation of the historic World War II submarine.
