Jacob Ventura PC: Fox 11 Online
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Jacob Ventura was sentenced Tuesday to 7.5 years in prison for his role in a 2022 murder on the city’s west side.
Previously, Gustavo Cantu was sentenced to 35 years in prison for the murder of Randall Denny, while Alejandro Cantu was sentenced to 15 years in prison for his role in the shooting at Perkins and Western avenues.
Ventura, 38, was convicted of harboring a felon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
He also was placed on extended supervision for eight years by Judge Thomas Walsh.
Before the sentence was issued, Ventura apologized. He noted the problems drugs have caused in his life, but said he is ready to remain sober and make a better life for himself and his family.
“I do have two daughters of my own and I couldn’t imagine the pain you had to endure. And I’m sorry for what you went through. All I can do is hope that you begin to heal as best as you can. Form there, I have to do what I have to do to make myself better,” he said.
District Attorney David Lasee did not make a specific sentence recommendation. On one hand, Lasee noted Ventura disposed of the murder weapon and has multiple prior convictions, but on the other, Ventura did eventually testify in the case, Lasee said.
Defense attorney May Lee said Ventura needs drug treatment. Testifying against his cousins was a difficult thing to do, she said. She requested a 1-year prison sentence.
Denny’s mother, Lynette Butler, described how the loss has impacted her family. Although Ventura may not have killed Denny, she said Ventura should get the same sentence as the other two.
Police have said the murder appeared to be tied a drug deal, with prosecutors adding that a theft by Denny — including money, drugs, and weapons — was a motivating factor.
