GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay-area law enforcement members are brushing up on their motorcycle safety skills.
It’s all part of the Green Bay Police Department’s yearly Motorcycle Operator Training and Recertification Course, which offers area police officers a chance to sharpen the skills needed to operate police motorcycles safely and effectively.
The intensive nine-day training includes slow speed maneuvering and traffic-related evasion techniques designed to keep officers in control on their motorcycles. Officers also practice navigating precision drills, safety maneuvers, and real-world riding scenarios.
This course is a key step for officers pursuing certification to serve as motorcycle operators within their respective agencies.
“It’s critical that they get these skills because the more control that you have over that motorcycle in the public, on the road, dealing with drivers that aren’t looking for you, who aren’t going to see you,” said GBPD Lt. Solomon Ayres, a certified police motorcycle instructor. “To stay upright and to be able to make the maneuvers that they need to make in tight situations, in tight spaces, or on two-lane roads. These officers can make a quite turnaround and go after what they need.”
He said over the years, some police officers who have never ridden a motorcycle before have completed the training course.
“We’ve got riders that have skill levels from a higher spectrum, all the way down to zero experience, and they’re able to come out here, as long as they’re willing to focus and do the work,” said Ayres.
He added police motorcycle operators don’t only work traffic situations; they also respond to service calls.
