Seven teams from Northeast Wisconsin clinched a spot to battle it out for a gold ball. Appleton East, Kimberly, West De Pere, Xavier, Laconia, St. Mary’s Catholic and Lourdes Academy will all compete at the Resch Court this year.
“There is always a good story. There are teams who get here a lot and some teams will come for the first time and we have some local teams that haven’t been here in a long time, so our main goal is to have the building filled,” said Resch Center Manager Terry Charles.
WIAA Assistant Director Melissa Gehring said, “I think it means a lot for high school athletics overall. When you come and see the kid that gave it their all, and came off the floor and they are just exhausted, or the emotion behind it that may not be caught on TV — you really understand how much this means for the kids, coaches and the fans.”
Gehring says local residents have a great experience waiting right at their fingertips. Although attendance is unpredictable, they expect a large turnout from the teams traveling from far away, too.
“Sometimes we get really surprised. Some people literally close down school for the day to get their teams and their kids here, and they will shut it down and bring busses after busses and they will unload here, so it just depends,” said Gehring.
Charles said, “Everybody knows everybody in Northeastern Wisconsin — and Wisconsin it seems like — so you become fans of your enemies, perhaps, once it comes to be at this point in the season.”
