APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — Appleton Ice Inc. is in the beginning phase of a major project at Appleton Family Ice Center and Tri-County Ice Arena in Neenah.
Repairs are needed to keep the facilities running well into the future.
Both locations serve thousands of kids in their hockey programs. Thomas Wroblewski, chair of the capital campaign project, says the programs, which are supported by the facilities, are important.
“With the kids, you can see improvements in their attitudes, improvements in grades, improvements in self esteem,” said Wroblewski. “it really is a huge benefit for these kids and their personal development.”
Most of the repairs would be to the facilities’ flooring, and some building equipment repairs. Specifically, Appleton Family Ice Center needs a new roof and dehumidification system, while Tri-County Ice Arena needs a new boiler, roof/ceiling, and additional parking space.
“Right now, the goal is to get through the hockey season with both facilities as they are,” said Wroblewski. “Then look at construction next summer in one or both of the facilities depending on timelines with what the user groups need, and what is going to be the most efficient way to do the projects.”
The total cost is estimated between $4-5 million. Wroblewski says they hope to get some public and private funding.
“We’re not asking for those monies or commitments just yet, we want to make sure we have all of our ducks in a row before we go to the community and start asking for and accepting money, but that will happen soon enough.”
