(WTAQ-WLUK) — Wisconsinites are asked to take a look inside their medicine cabinets as the DOJ announces the upcoming Drug Take Back Day.
More than 270 law enforcement agencies across Wisconsin will be participating in Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, Oct. 28 where people are encouraged to dispose of unwanted and unused medications.
Drug Take Back Day provides a safe, convenient and responsible means of disposal, while also educating the community about the potential abuse and consequences of improper storage and disposal of these medications.
“The simple step of cleaning out your medicine cabinet and properly disposing of unwanted medications can help in the fight against the opioid epidemic,” said Attorney General Josh Kaul.
Unused or expired medicine should never be flushed or poured down the drain. Water reclamation facilities are not designed to remove all pharmaceuticals, and trace amounts are showing up in rivers and lakes.
Most law enforcement agencies have drop boxes available year-round.
Last October, 647,163 pounds of drugs were collected nationwide. The state of Wisconsin ranks high among states that collect the most on Drug Take Back Day.
