APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) — Appleton’s Houdini Elementary School has been named a 2023 Blue Ribbon School by the U.S. Department of Education.
353 total schools across the United States were recognized; 8 of those were in Wisconsin. The recognition honors high-performing schools and schools that are making strides in closing achievement gaps between students.
“We had been nominated under the category of achievement gap closing,” said Houdini principal Katie Hardesty. “Based on our diversity, we are working hard in collaboration amongst staff and the district to make sure all our students are achieving at high levels.”
Houdini serves about 550 students in grades K-6.
This is the first time the school has received the award.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education honors the National Blue Ribbon Schools at the awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. At the ceremony, each school receives a plaque and flag to signify its exemplary status.
