OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A preliminary report on last month’s double fatal plane crash on Lake Winnebago is releasing more details on what happened.
The NTSB report reads that on July 29 a North American AT-6D airplane, N49961 was at the EAA AirVenture fly-in at Wittman Regional Airport.
The plane left runway 27 about 8:57 a.m., the report reads, and then made a right turn toward the north for about three miles before it turned toward the east-northeast.
The flightpath took the airplane over Lake Winnebago, outside of the OSH Class D airspace. The airplane proceeded out over the lake, reached a peak altitude of 3,900 feet, before it descended rapidly into the lake at 9:05 a.m.
The cause of the crash was not indicated in the report.
Both the pilot and passenger died in the crash. They are identified as 20-year-old Zach Colliemoreno, whose hometown was not available, and 30-year-old Devyn Reiley from Guadalupe, Texas.
