GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — As the Green Bay Police Department continues to receive complaints from residents about speed and reckless driving, they’re reminding residents about the volunteer Speed Watch program.
The Speed Watch program is comprised of community volunteers who watch for speeding violations, and bring speeding-related issues to police to help make them aware of problem areas in the city.
Volunteers can record speeds at the location of their choice and at a time most convenient for them.
“We do have radar guns available, and they receive training from some of our traffic enforcement officers or lieutenants of community policing,” said Melanie Skalmoski, Crime Prevention Coordinator with the Green Bay Police Department. “They’ll also go over what to look for.”
When the department receives notice of a violation from a volunteer, the registered owner of the vehicle will receive a letter from the department with the date and time of a suspected speed violation, recorded speed, and the speed limit at the location. This is not a citation, and no enforcement action is taken.
The Police Department recommends volunteering with a friend or neighbor.
