HORTONVILLE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An effort is underway in Hortonville to help feed some school-aged children during the summer break.
Inside the Otter Creek Sports Bar and Grill, Co-Owner Judy Peterson says it’s typical to feed 60-70 customers lunch on a daily basis, but on Wednesday, new items are on the menu.
“You could either get a hot dog, macaroni and cheese. It will come with chips, fruit, milk, Kool-Aid. We’ll throw in some different things, every once in a while,” said Judy Peterson, Otter Creek Sports Bar and Grill Co-Owner.
Peterson says the special menu is geared toward those aged 5-16 who may not be getting a nourishing meal at lunch time.
“I just think there’s so many people whose families work, with both parents working, that the kids are left home to fend for themselves for the summer,” she said.
A plastic jar sits on the bar. Manager Nicole Magolski says people are able to donate to the cause.
“A lot of people have stepped up, throwing anything from a dollar, to five dollars, to twenty dollars, just to help out. So we had enough to grab fruit, and balance out the plate a little better. We have a couple of ladies in the community who are coming in to help us actually serve the kids, which is pretty amazing,” said Nicole Magolski, Otter Creek Sports Bar and Grill Manager.
Judy Peterson says food costs are about three dollars per child. The free lunch program is scheduled to run Monday through Friday, until school returns.
“We’re excited, and a little nervous, because we don’t know what to expect. We have a lot of people that support us in our community. So we’d like to give back. It’s just a small gesture of something we can do to help the families in the area,” she said.
Peterson says seven kids were served free lunch on Wednesday.
