GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An Ashwaubenon murder may have resulted from the suspect being upset with the victim because of his relationship with the woman also implicated in the case, a prosecutor said Tuesday.
Braxton Phillips, 23, was shot and killed March 1 at the Creekwood Apartments on Viking Drive.
The alleged shooter, Prez Wade, 21, has not made an initial appearance yet, and charges have not been filed. But he has admitted to his role in the murder to investigators, Assistant District Attorney Wendy Lemkuil said in court Tuesday.
Keilana Brunette, 21 appeared in court Tuesday for a bail hearing, as formal charges have not been filed. Police have requested counts of being party to intentional homicide, aiding a felon and obstructing the investigation. A $10,000 cash bond was set. She returns to court July 10 for an initial appearance.
To support the argument for a cash bond, Lemkuil said Brunette had given multiple statements lying to police but changed her story in an interview last week.
“She admitted to misleading law enforcement officers because she was trying to help Prez. She then admitted that she was now giving correct information later, but admitted to initially giving the wrong information. And the information was related to removing the SIM card and destroying the phones,” Lemkuil said. “Our concerns are that they’re concerned to get rid of the SIM card, destroy the phone and the text messages, which allegedly are indicating that Prez was upset about Miss Brunette’s relationship with the deceased victim.”
Phone forensics place her at the scene. Also, Wade has implicated Brunette, Lemkuil said.
Defense attorney Carrie LaPlant argued the documents presented in court Tuesday do not implicate Brunette in the murder itself.
