GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A project connecting Northeast Wisconsin with faster internet service is moving along after breaking ground a year ago.
TDS Telecommunications LLC gave an update on its progress installing a new all-fiber network in Green Bay Friday.
Since May 2, 2022, crews have built 91 miles of fiber in the city of Green Bay and provided about 5,800 homes and businesses access to its network.
The project provides ultra-fast internet upload and download speeds of up to 8 Gig (8,000Mbps).
Senior vice president of corporate affairs for TDS, Drew Petersen, says they’re showing great progress on the one-year anniversary.
“Fiber optics is the most reliable broadband in the country; it really is the gold standard and so customers will have speeds that are symmetrical so they’re just as fast up as they are down,” he said. “This is disruptive to the community, we understand that, but again, when we’re complete and it’s accomplished, it’s going to be just a real game-changer for Green Bay.”
When TDS finishes its work in Green Bay by the end of 2025, up to 38,000 homes will have access.
And while work continues in Green Bay, TDS wrapped up major construction activities in Little Chute, Kimberly, and Combined Locks as it continues building its network throughout the Fox Valley. In those three communities, crews built 130 miles of fiber to serve more than 9,200 homes and businesses.
Earlier this week, the three Fox Valley communities received Fiber-Fast Community awards recognizing residents’ and businesses’ access to world-class internet.
In the coming weeks and months, TDS is expanding its fiber network to nearly 100 communities, which also includes Appleton, Harrison, Kaukauna, Menasha, Neenah, Grand Chute, and Fox Crossing.
