KEWAUNEE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An effort along the Lakeshore has the hopes of getting everyone a chance to get outside and play.
A fundraiser for the Bruemmer Park Inclusive Playground is happening on Saturday.
From wooded, picturesque views, to a ride on the familiar merry-go-round, Bruemmer Park and Zoo west of Kewaunee has a lot to offer. But one group wants to change some of that.
“Our mission is to bring children of all differing abilities to a playground that is centrally-located,” said Rhonda Detampel, Bruemmer Park Inclusive Playground President.
Rhonda Detampel formed the non-profit group Bruemmer Park Inclusive Playground before COVID to help give all a chance to play.
“We were isolated for so long. It’s going to be great to bring all children back together, and they can actually play together,” she said.
The playground plan features specialized swings, a ground-level merry-go-round, and even two zip-lines. All would be connected with ramps.
“We have climbing equipment. We’ve got mazes. We also have a musical arch that will be playing,” said Detampel.
The $450,000 playground will be built close to the current equipment. The Kewaunee County Public Health Department is holding a 5K-10K fun run on Saturday. Registered Dietician Rachel Bauer says all proceeds will go to the new playground.
“It’s kind of an at-your-own pace, and we wanted that specifically so that people of all abilities could get out and do their thing. So we decided not to do t-shirts, or time it, and have bibs. We wanted just everybody to participate,” said Rachel Bauer, Kewaunee County Health Department Registered Dietician.
Rhonda Detampel says while fundraising is just beginning, she says the end is already in sight.
“Why do we need this? Because we have a passion for doing this. We want all people to come together again as a community, and let the kids have an enjoyable day and play on the equipment,” she said.
Registration on Saturday starts at 8 a.m.
The run-walk kicks off at 9 a.m.
The cost for adults is $20, and it’s $10 per child aged 5 and up.
