GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A man who helped clean up a murder scene was convicted Thursday of aiding a felon, and was sentenced to time served.
Alexander Burgos-Mojica, 48, pleaded no contest to the one count in connection with the murder of Jason Mendez-Ramos, whose burned body was eventually found at the UW-Green Bay campus in September 2021. Pedro Santiago-Marquez owed Mendez-Ramos $80,000 for cocaine, leading to Santiago-Marquez killing Mendez-Ramos.
Although Burgos-Mojica was sentenced to a year in prison by Judge Donald Zuidmulder, he has been in custody for 422 days, so his time behind bars is complete. Burgos-Mojica was also placed on extended supervision for five years.
Before the sentence was issued, Burgos-Mojica said he was sorry for his role in the incident.
Assistant District Attorney Kimberly Hardtke described Burgos-Mojica’s role as assisting with the clean up at the murder scene, and making it more difficult for investigators to determine what happened in the case.
Defense attorney Nila Robinson said that Burgos-Mojica was not a part of the drug deals which led to the murder, and has no criminal history. He was in no position to change what happened to Mendez-Ramos, and wasn’t present for the shooting itself, she noted, but got caught up in the aftermath.
Santiago-Marquez was convicted earlier this month of the murder itself. Sentencing is scheduled for May 30. Jeisaac Rodriguez-Garcia, who allegedly disposed of the body, is scheduled to stand trial April 19.
