BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Boxes of children’s books arrived at the Brown County Sheriff’s Office Monday as part of an effort to provide comfort to children in crisis situations.
The delivery is thanks to a $10,000 donation from AT&T to REACH-A-Child, an organization that provides first responders with drawstring backpacks full of children’s books.
“We give these books out to children when we have contact with families and often times, we have children that need to be distracted or we can use it to build rapport with children,” explained Brown County Sheriff Todd Delain.” Other times, we are just in situations where we think having some books around the house would be great.”
Every Brown County Sheriff’s Office squad car has a backpack with books in it for this purpose. And with the recent donation, the office has extras to restock the cars.
“We have about 300 departments that we currently support. And that includes, you know, very small departments all the way up to the state patrol, which has 550 vehicles,” said REACH-A-Child Executive Director Curtis Fuszard. “So, our mission: have one of these backpacks into the vehicles of every single first responder department in Wisconsin.”
The Green Bay Metro Fire Department also received additional books and backpacks on Monday.
