DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Graduating students from Medical College of Wisconsin – Green Bay — along with roughly 40,000 other students across the country — learned where they would go to take their next step towards becoming a doctor.
MCW-GB celebrated National Residency Match Day on Friday. It’s a day of celebration when graduating students discover where they will be placed for their residency.
With the Green Bay campus beginning in 2015, the 21 students represent the sixth graduating class from MCW-GB.
This class was particularly noteworthy for a number of reasons, according to Campus Dean Dr. Matthew Hunsaker.
The students began their med school studies during the pandemic, going into hospitals during a time filled with uncertainty.
COVID-19 not only brought additional stressors to the students but, also, those who worried about their safety during the global pandemic.
“This is your day too,” Hunsaker told the students’ loved ones.
Regardless of a global pandemic, the dean called med school a “test of strength, resilience and character.”
“Med school’s difficult; it doesn’t matter where you go — whether it’s for years or three years,” said Hunsaker. “It takes a special person to step up to that challenge.”
And these students rose to the challenge. In just the first round of residency applications, each of them was matched with a program.
With some students traveling across the country, Hunsaker made sure to remind them that they will always have a place to call home in Northeast Wisconsin.
“Your journey may take you a little bit farther away from Green Bay than you had imagined, but we hope you remember that you’ve got a home here in Green Bay at MCW.”
