WAUKESHA, WI (WTAQ-WRN) – We could get our first look at the Waukesha Christmas Parade suspect’s defense strategy. The judge in the case gave Darrell Brooks Jr. til the end of the day today to produce his witness list.
Brooks is acting as his own lawyer, and didn’t offer an opening statement. It’s not clear what kind of defense he will offer. He has been erratic and disruptive each day of the trial so far.
Prosecutors began with witnesses last week, they are expected to continue with their case today.
Meanwhile…Darrell Brooks Jr.’s mother says he didn’t mean to hurt anyone.
A Milwaukee TV station had an interview with Brooks’ mom, Dawn Woods, last night. She said Brooks has a history of manic episodes, and says he cannot remember what he did once they are over.
She thinks Brooks was having one of those episodes on the day of the parade. She says he wasn’t in his right mind and wouldn’t intentionally hurt anyone.
Brooks is facing life in prison for killing six and hurting 60 others when police say he ran his SUV through the parade crowd last November.
