GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — T-shirts with the image of the Green Bay flag adopted in 1973 will be sold to raise money for the arts programs in Green Bay public schools.
Theresa Devroy, then a student at West High School, submitted the winning design in a contest by then-Mayor Thomas Atkinston. Devroy attended Madison Technical School and then worked in advertising before dying in 1977 at age 21.
Susan Adams, Devroy’s older sister, said the family is honored to take part in this effort.
“My sister, I thought, was a talented young artist who had a humble, kind spirit and truly beautiful soul. And she left our world much too soon,” Adams said. “So, to have her memory and the gifts she gave to the city of Green Bay remembered today in this way, in this particular way, is really an inspiring reminder to us, and especially to young people, that every individual, no matter your age, can make a difference. And it may live on long after you do, you never know.”
The t-shirts are listed for sale at $24.99 and are available online. Proceeds will go to Green Bay Area Public Schools Education Foundation.
The flag is green and yellow. It features a Packers helmet, milk carton, cheese wedge, paper towel roll, a cargo ship and evergreen trees, along with the words “GREEN BAY, WISCONSIN.”
The city later replaced the Devroy-designed flag with one featuring the cupola from the main pavilion at the Bay Beach Amusement Park.
