GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Crossing access to frontage roads near Packerland Drive and Mason Street will be eliminated, a roundabout will be built between the intersection and Southwest High School, and the entrance to NWTC will be revised, according to plans by the Brown County Highway Department.
A four-stage, $3.5 million project is for construction next year, according to Highway Commissioner Paul Fonetecchio.
Stage 1: NWTC access
Construction: April-May 2023
- Mason Street connection to South Frontage Road & NWTC
- North Frontage Road to connect near NWTC entrance
- Mason Street pedestrian crossing with Pedestrian Signal
Stage 2: Packerland Drive & Trojan Drive roundabout
Construction: June-August 2023
- Multi-lane roundabout at CTH EB (Packerland Drive) and Trojan Drive
- Construction in phases to maintain access to Trojan Drive (west of CTH EB) at all times
- Southbound traffic only on CTH EB during roundabout construction
Stage 3: Southwest H.S.
Construction: July 2023
- Concrete pavement repair
- Left turn lanes into Southwest High School
- Modified parking lot exit
Stage 4: Mason Street Intersection
Construction: September 2023
- Raised medians at the North and South Frontage Roads
- Concrete pavement repair
- Mason Street pedestrian crossing
A public informational meeting will be held from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday in the Mallard Conference Room at the Duck Creek Center, 2198 Glendale Avenue in Howard. The meeting will be an open house format with Representatives from the Brown County Highway Department available to discuss the proposed project improvements, construction traffic control, right of way impacts, and address other questions.
While this meeting is open to the public, the focus will be on the businesses in the area that will be impacted by this project.
The project is funded by both Brown County and the City of Green Bay, with Brown County taking the lead for project development.
Since 2018, the Packerland Drive and Mason Street intersection has seen more than 31 car crashes resulting in injury and countless more crashes with fender-benders and car damage.
