GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – The United States Postal Service is hiring across Wisconsin, including in Green Bay and the Fox Valley.
As they’re looking to hire about 500 employees statewide, job fairs are being held at post office locations across the area. USPS Workforce Planning Specialist Lisa Wojnarowski was helping people apply at their Green Bay office on Tuesday.
“Our application process can be a little tricky, sometimes a little cumbersome, and maybe even annoying for some folks. But I’m here to get them through all of those little hiccups and make sure they successfully apply,” Wojnarowski told WTAQ News. “We want to get the applicants in, and we want to share the word and share the positivity of the post office.”
One applicant had just wrapped up as we arrived, while another was working her way through the application process. However, only six people had shown up halfway through the six-hour fair.
“Usually, we get between 15 and 25 folks, but today’s been a little slow. I don’t know if the rain has kind of kept them away,” Wojnarowski said. “You only need to be over the age of 18, or you need to be 16 with a high school diploma. If you are applying for one of our carrier positions, you do need to have a driver’s license for at least 2 years with a clean driving record.”
Despite the lower than expected turnout to start, Wojnarowski remains optimistic, and encourages people to learn about the opportunities within the postal service.
“It’s a great place to start your career. You never have to worry about job security, you don’t have to worry about getting laid off, you don’t have to worry about us shutting the doors,” Wojnarowski said. “Our non-career positions are converting to career at a record rate right now, because we have a lot of our workforce at retirement age. Last year alone, we converted over 63,000 employees nationwide to career positions. So what that means is, they get a pension when they retire, they get to contribute to the their savings plan, and get all the benefits of being a career employee.”
Post office job fairs are being held at the Appleton facility from 9-3 Wednesday, and again from 9-3 in Oshkosh on Thursday.
