WAUSHARA COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A former Waushara County camp counselor is facing a child sexual assault charge in an incident that occurred in 2009.
Remington J. Nystrom, 33, is charged with one count of first-degree child sexual assault contact with a child under the age of 13. Nystrom is accused of inappropriately touching the victim while the child was asleep at Mt. Morris Camp and Retreat Center in the Waushara County town of Mount Morris.
According to the criminal complaint, the alleged victim reported the assault through the Wisconsin Attorney General’s website for clergy and faith leader abuse last May. The victim said the abuse happened at a church camp in 2009, when he was 10 years old.
The victim in this case had not reported the assault to either church or legal authorities prior to reporting it on AG’s website.
The criminal complaint does not include a statement from Nystrom, who lives in Wisconsin Rapids. Camp leaders confirmed the victim attended the camp, but did not address the allegations.
Attorney general Josh Kaul’s office says this is the first charge filed resulting from a tip made through the website.
“This case is possible because of the report made by a brave survivor and the diligent work of investigators, victim service professionals, and prosecutors,” Kaul said in a news release. “We continue to ask anyone with information about clergy and faith leader abuse to make a report to the Wisconsin Department of Justice.”
Survivors of clergy or faith leader abuse, their friends and family, or anyone who has information about how a religious organization has responded to reported abuse are encouraged to report that information to DOJ either online at SupportSurvivors.widoj.gov or by calling 1-877-222-2620.
