STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — More land is now permanently protected in Door County.
The Door County Land Trust says two properties on Washington Island were donated to the trust.
“It is an honor to work with landowners to carry forward their vision of permanently protecting their land and we are grateful for their generosity,” Door County Land Trust Executive Director Tom Clay said in a news release. “Protecting island habitat like this is a powerful benefit for migratory birds and enhances Door County’s unique biodiversity.”
One of the donations is a 62-acre property that lies near the Indian Point Natural Area of the island. The property contains a forest of red maple trees, along with balsam fir and white spruce trees.
The other donation is a 10-acre forested property on the northwest side and adjoins the trust’s Little Lake Nature Preserve. The property has maple and beech trees with a cobble ridge.
The latest donations result in more than 8,000 combined acres protected by the trust, the release says.
